On Gandhi Jayanti, Udhayanidhi Stalin Urges Defense of Communal Harmony, Truth, and Secular Fraternity Against Divisive Politics

Commemorating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition and DMK Youth Wing Secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin described the Father of the Nation as the defining identity of modern India. Facing British artillery without weapons, Gandhi opened the path to national independence through mass civil disobedience. Udhayanidhi called upon democratic forces to renew their pledge to safeguard truth, administrative probity, communal harmony, and secular brotherhood across the country. His appeal addresses an acute political crisis. Across several states, right-wing outfits continue to normalize majoritarian prejudice and distort the history of the freedom struggle. In Tamil Nadu, the Dravidian movement has long insisted that political freedom is meaningless without religious tolerance and the eradication of caste hierarchies. By invoking Gandhi's uncompromising opposition to communal hate, Udhayanidhi linked minority protection directly to the constitutional promise of social justice. Sectarian friction fractures working-class solidarity. It distracts youth from pressing concerns like public education, fair employment, and state autonomy. Udhayanidhi affirmed that Tamil Nadu will remain a bastion against communal divisiveness, guided by the rationalist and egalitarian legacy of Thanthai Periyar, Perarignar Anna, and Muthamizharignar Kalaignar.
